How to Thrive During Winter

Winter in Maine is here! Love it or loathe it, we all must endure it. This year, why not thrive through the Winter season in this gorgeous state?

Although much of our indoor environment is climate controlled and insulated from the outside environment, it’s still vital for us to be aware of the patterns and changes of the seasons. Our bodies are inextricably linked to the rhythms of nature, so here are three easy tips to help you tap into those rhythms and stay healthy in the Winter Wonderland of Maine!

  1. Stay Warm

You may be thinking, “Of course I want to stay warm in the winter.” Ahhh, but are you maximizing your lifestyle to stay warm from the inside out? As our outside environment starts to slow down with the colder weather, our digestive system slows down as well. Cold and raw foods may feel refreshing in the Summer, but it takes more resources for our body to digest cold and raw foods during the colder months. The digestive system is like a stew; it works best with warm food that requires less resources to digest. Consider replacing the salad and ice water with hearty soups and warm tea. You’ll be surprised how much more energy your body has to work with!

2. Rest and Slow Down

As the sun sets earlier this time of year, our bodies are signaled to rest earlier as well. While Summer is a time for gregariousness and liveliness, Winter signals a time of rest and serenity. Though our society may be perpetually fast paced, winter is a time where nature slows down and looks inward. Allow for more time of quiet reflection and contemplation, give yourself grace if you need more sleep than usual, and enjoy the serene peace that accompanies Winter.

3. Move and Groove

While Winter is an ideal time for nesting, it's also important to have movement practices to keep the joints warm and well-lubricated. As the temperature drops, it can be more difficult for circulation to reach our joints. Simple exercises to keep our gears turning smoothly are key. Have you tried yoga, Qi-gong or low-intensity weight training? A movement practice that limits profuse sweating is more sustainable to our health during the colder, Winter months.
